Serving up Unique Gifts & Clothing in Angels Camp!
As the previous owner of 2 Day Spas over the past 34 years in Citrus Heights California, Marlena McLaughlin always enjoyed spending time shopping in boutiques, perusing and window shopping the offers on hand by little shops in Sierra foothill towns up and down the 49 corridor. “I always thought it would be fun to own and run a boutique someday, and that I would be able to do a great job picking out the merchandise people would enjoy.”
When she and her husband closed the day spas and she moved to Sutter’s Creek, she was hoping that it might be the perfect destination for her first boutique “I really expected Sutter’s Creek to be “the place” but nothing really clicked with me until… We came and stayed at Greenhorn Creek, at the Worldmark, to play golf, and I fell in love with Angels Camp!” They loved it so much, that they sold their historic Sutter’s Creek house and MOVED to Angels camp to live here full time as residents, and open her dream boutique – Eclectra.
When I asked her WHY she decided on Angels Camp, Marlena had some great answers:
- People here love frogs, it’s a cute and funny symbol, and very memorable – I wanted to be located in a place that was quirky and fun- Angels Camp is the best!
- After talking to the other merchants in town, I felt it was the right kind of crowd, traffic and environment I wanted to be in, that I could contribute something special here that would be appreciated.
- The Costs are really affordable for retail space, and in SUCH a cute, historic downtown location!
- There has been a great response from both locals AND tourists so far – it’s been really rewarding because I feel like I’m able to help people find what they WANT and what they NEED here.
“You know how when you’re supposed to be in a certain place, it just clicks?”
Eclectra is named for “Eclectic” – she carries a wide variety of accessories, home and garden items, fun and unique clothing for every season. “I want to carry stuff that is unique, is’t like everyone else that you can’t find in other local stores. I also carry a wide variety of sizes – something I know has been appreciated already by many locals and tourists alike.”
I want people to think of us as “fun, helpful, memorable, noticeable and consistent as well as reasonably priced.” She shows me the adorable, comfortable and well-decorated fitting rooms – one of the areas that people remark on most often in her store. Cozy, well lit rooms where it would be a pleasure to try on clothes and spend a little time escaping from reality while shopping with friends or family.
One thing that is clear – Marlena truly loves Angels Camp and wants to serve the community. “I’m proud of our town, I want to be here to help people, it takes all types of people from all walks of life to make up a special town like this.” As a warm and kind businesswoman, she reaches out to each of her customers and welcomes them individually as an ambassador for our downtown Angels Camp community.
She may have named the business “Eclectra” because of the correlation to “Eclectic”, and the shop truly represents the name accurately, but I find in Marlena’s chosen business name another correlation – to the Greek word “Ecclesiastic” which means “Gatherer”, and is traditionally translated as “Teacher”.
Marlena is gathering not only fun, enjoyable and unique items for a shopping escape in Angels Camp, but is a warm and natural gatherer and teacher of the people who are visiting and living in the heart of our community.
