Bird Watching
The area around Angels Camp is among the State’s top birding areas. New Melones Lake is home to one of the largest populations of Golden Eagles, wintering Bald Eagles, and Osprey. Salt Springs Valley Reservoir hosts Yellow-billed Magpies, Phainopeplas, Lewis’s Woodpeckers, Ferruginous and Rough Legged Hawks. The birds at Calaveras Big Trees State Park are a little harder to find as they tend to be deep woods species, but you will enjoy the beautiful surroundings as well. The Central Sierra Audubon Society has compiled an extensive listing of all the different birds seen in and around Angels Camp.
